"If you missed the show, it’s a funny, bittersweet tale of
manners, misunderstanding and mishap, following the fortunes of naive
and eager-to-please widower Guy Jones.
A family pantomime by Ben Crocker
4-6 January 2018
Baba has fallen in love with the slave girl, Safiya, but he must seek
his fortune to buy her freedom from his older brother Cassim. Their
mother, Mum Baba, looks after the family camel when she is not running
her kebab stall, but the arrival of Mustafa and his band of thieves
leads to adventures for everyone and the chance to make their fortune.
On the way, Mustafa Leikh loses many of his thieves and a local tailor,
Fab Rick, comes to the rescue.
Ali Baba is a traditional pantomime, suitable for the whole family.
Players’ 2017 May play was Alan
Ayckbourn’s ‘A Chorus of Disapproval’. Assistant Director Neil Hellard looks back.
Guy joins an amateur light
operatic society at the early rehearsals for John Gay's 18th century parody of life at that time, ‘The Beggars Opera’.
Ayckbourn cleverly mirrors Guy's trajectory within the society with the
lead character in the piece they're performing, and we see Guy’s rise
from a bit-part character to the show’s lead. There’s also several
affairs within the cast and some dodgy dealings around a local land
The show was especially challenging for us, with it’s longer than usual
running time, the difficult operatic songs and the elaborate scenery,
lighting and costume changes. But the cast and crew all rose to the
occasion and performed brilliantly. Their hard work and dedication was
rewarded by almost universally positive feedback from the audience over
the three performances."
